Michael Reinhard Heß: “Two worlds can into me, I can not fit into this world”

Azerbaijan´s president İlham Əliyev has declared 2019 the official Nəsimi Year to commemorate the 650th anniversary of Nəsimi´s birth.

Contributing to this celebratory event, the book you hold in hands tries to bring the eminent Azerbaijani poet İmadǝddin Nəsimi (ca. 1369-1418) closer to an English-speaking public. Albeit Nəsimi is one of the most perfected poets of the Islamic tradition, he still is widely unknown in the West. Nəsimi´s incontrovertible greatness as a poet results from the combination of his linguistic and literary perfection with his fervent, emotional and missionary message. For this message, Nəsimi ultimately even was executed.

The book focusses on the historical and philosophical context that shaped İmadǝddin Nəsimi. For it is by better understanding this context that a modern reader may be able to grasp some of the deeper meanings hidden in his uniquely beautiful poetry.
