The aim of this publication is to introduce the general public to the history of Karabakh from the 13th to the early 20th centuries. By studying this long period of time, it is demonstrated that Karabakh is inseparable from the history of the modern independent state of Azerbaijan from at least the 13th century onwards, when the toponym “Karabakh” or “the Karabakh of Arran” probably appeared for the first time in written sources. The main stages of Karabakh´s history, including the Safavid era, the time of the independent Khanate of Karabakh (1747-1822) and the Russian occupation, confirmed in the Treaty of Kurakchay of 1805 between İbrahimxǝlil xan, in his capacity as Khan of Şuşa and Karabakh, and the Russians are treated. However, even after the dissolution of the Karabakh Khanate as a result of the Russian conquest, Karabakh continued, and continues, to play a crucial role in the political and cultural history of Azerbaijan. By following through the intriguing, multi-faceted and often dramatic stages of Karabakh´s history the reader will get deeper insight into Azerbaijan´s history.
